Black Oxide/Blackening
Black oxide or blackening is a conversion coating that adds mild corrosion resistance and appearance. One advatage of black Oxide is that it won't change the shim thickness. Materials that can be blackened include Steel, Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, Copper, Brass, Cadmium, Zinc, Nickel and Electroless Nickel. Black Oxide is most used for carbon steel shims. Specifications for black oxide include MIL-DTL-13924, AMS 2485, ASTM D769, and ISO 11408.
Stainless Steel Passivation
Stainless stieel passivation is a process that remove free iron or iron compounds from a stainless steel surface. This process does not affect stainless steel itself. Psiisvation will dissolve the particles and allow a thin transparent film to form on the surface to enhance corrosion resistance. Passivation does not change thickness of the material. Specifications for stainless steel passivation include QQ-P-35, ASTM A 967, ASM 2700, ASTM A 380.
Anonizing
Anodizing is a common process for Aluminum. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and also service as surface preparation for paint primers. Common types of anodizing include Chromic Acid (MIL-A-8625 type I) and Sulfuric Acid Anodizing (MIL-A-8625 type II, III). Other materials can be anodized include titanium, zinc, magnesium, niobium, and tantalum.

Painting - Primer and finish is a common process for shims. We can provide painting to most commercial and military specification.
